Abstract
918,746. Coating yarns. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 7323/61. Class 140. A process for coating a strand 9, e.g. of glass fibres, or a wire, comprises applying a coating material 21 to the strand, passing the coated strand through a rotatable die 25, and rotating the die 25 whereby the coating material within the die 25 is rotated about the strand to impart a twist to the strand. The twist may be permanent or temporary. Coating material is pumped to a neck 23 for delivery on to a plate 19 over which the strand is drawn. The die 25 is carried by a spindle 50 mounted in bearings 51, 52 on a member 53 which is slidable vertically in a easing 58. Rotary motion is transmitted to the spindle 50 by a driven endless belt 61 which contacts a rubber bushing 60 on the spindle. Actuation of a lever 77 draws the member 53 upwards against a spring 75 to disengage the parts 60, 61, as desired, slots 54, 55 in the casing 58 permitting movement of the bearings 51, 52. The coated strand 28 is taken by an endless conveyer through an oven to a wind-up apparatus. In a modification, a hopper containing grains, flakes or short fibres of glass or other natural or synthetic material is located after the die 25 and the strand drawn therethrough and through a second stationary or rotatable die and, if desired, through a spraycoating device, e.g. for applying varnish or enamel, before the strand enters the oven, Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 6, coating material 119 is delivered to a tube 117 having slots 118 through which strand 9 passes prior to traversing the die 25. In both embodiments, several coating apparatus and their associated dies 25 may be arranged sideby-side to deal with several parallel strands, the belt 61 driving all the dies 25. Coating materials mentioned are vinyls, polystyrenes, phenolformaldehyde, polyesters, polythenes, polyacrylates, polypropylenes, polyvinyl butyrals, cellulose derivatives, polyamides, oleoresinous enamels, and where a wire is to be coated, polyvinyl formal and cresol formaldehyde resins. The dies may be provided interiorly with vanes or grooves which augment the rotation of the coating material with a consequent decrease in its viscosity and an increase in its tendency to impart a twist to the strand. It is stated that coating material may be projected into the dies, the pre-coating step being omitted.
