Abstract
1,262,804. Starting spinning machines. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 27 Feb., 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 9681/70. Heading D1D. In apparatus for winding strands 22, particularly of glass filaments, or fibres coated with rubber or plastics, on ring spindles 26, means 80 are provided to feed the strand to the ring spindles and the arrangement is such that on starting up the spindles 26 there is a short delay, e.g. one-tenth to upwards of two seconds, before the rollers 79 of the feeding means are driven. This ensures that slack in the strand is taken up and that the strand is tensioned so that the strand, particularly if slightly tacky, does not wrap about the rollers 79 and cause a break. Spindles 26 are driven from a motor 66 via a shaft 64, belt 56 and wharves 38. Rollers 79 are driven from motor 66 via an electromagnetic clutch 92, belt 90, gearing 87, belt 83 and shaft 82. An electric circuit with a timer is provided so that when motor 66 is switched on there is a delay before the clutch 92 is closed and rollers 79 driven. A further timer may be incorporated in the circuit to switch off motor 66 when the packages are full.
