Abstract

1440613 Stranding machines INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 20 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29338/73 Heading D1T A double-twist stranding machine having an elongate flexible flyer element 28 extending between spaced synchronously rotating members 20, 21 is so constructed that the flyer element 28 can move radially outwards under centrifugal force, and against elastic restraint, so as to increase the path length between the spaced members 20, 21. The flyer element 28 is itself inextensible but extends to a reserve carried by one or both of the members 20, 21. Resilient means permits paying out of said reserve against said elastic restraint as the speed of rotation increases. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the reserve is carried by rotatable members (35, 36) urged in one direction of rotation by helical springs (41, 42). In this example the flyer element 28 comprises two metal wires arranged side-byside at a common radius, and means such as rings or tubes for spacing apart said wires along their lengths and for maintaining the strands 30 on said path. In a modified form the reserve is carried by an elongate slider slidable in guides under the influence of a spring bias. A duplicate flyer assembly 29 is present to balance the twister. In Fig. 1 the elements to be twisted enter the twister axially from the right hand end, pass over the pulleys 23, 26; thence along the flyer 28a; over the pulleys 24, 22; axially along the cradle 66 to pulley 69: around pulleys 69, 70 and thence onto the take-up drum 72.
