Abstract

918,624. Cigarette lighters using liquefied gas. FLAMINAIRE M. QUERCIA. May 29, 1959 [June 3, 1958; May 4, 1959], No. 18448/59. Class 75 (3). A liquefied gas reservoir 2 is removably secured to a lighter and is provided with an outlet valve 5 actuated by a control-rod 4 adapted to be pushed in to open the valve by a rivet head 24 on a resilient lever 22 fixed at one end 23 to the lighter body, and a gas-tight connection between the outlet orifice of the valve and a tube 17 leading to the burner is provided by a bell-shaped connecting-piece 18 made of resilient material which is tightly pressed against the reservoir 2 when the valve is opened. The bell-shaped connecting-piece is secured to the resilient lever 22 by the rivet 24. The resilient lever 22 is moved to open the valve by a push-member 19 pivoted at 20 to an operating lever 6 and provided with a thickened end 21 which is pushed between the lighter body and the resilient lever 22. The push-member 19 and the resilient lever 22 are guided by lugs 25, 26 on the lighter body. The operating lever 6 is connected by a ratchet-wheel to a sparkwheel which co-operates with a spring-urged flint to form a jet of sparks which extends in the same direction as the stream of gas from the burner and passes through an aperture in an external casing (not shown). The burner is nearer to the outlet aperture than is the flint. The gas reservoir may be of circular oval or polygonal shape. In the lighter shown in Fig. 3 the control-rod 4a of the outlet valve of the gas reservoir 2a is adapted to be pushed downwardly to open the valve by a support 35 pivoted at 30 to the lighter body, and a rubber sleeve 18o connects the valve outlet to conduits 36, 37 leading to the burner 7a. Either the top edge of the sleeve 18a is connected to the support 35 or its other edge is connected to a flange 42 on the valve. The operating lever 6a is rigidly secured to a lever 32 pivoted at one end to an eccentric 33 for driving a ratchet-wheel and a spark-wheel 14 and at its other end to a link 34 pivoted to the support 35. A spring 50 acts between the support 35 and the lever 32 and a weaker spring 31 acts between the support 35 and the gas reservoir 2a. When the operating lever 6a is depressed the support 35 first moves downwardly to open the gas valve and further movement of the lever 6a then operates the sparkwheel and withdraws a resilient plate 52 covering a gas outlet aperture 53 in the lighter casing. The flow of gas can be throttled by a member 38 adapted to be screwed into a blind hole in the support 35 to compress a resilient washer 44. A milled edge on the member 38 projects through slots in the lighter body. The bottom of the blind hole is concave and the gas conduit 36 opens axially into the hole whereas the other gas conduit 37 opens into the hole near the periphery thereof. Specification 918,625 is referred to.
