. tuating means'terminating in a yieldable portion devised after the manner of the well known pocket clip. In these known devices the construction is of such a kind that pressure exercised upon the yieldable actuating means disengages a catch from a notch on the extinguishing cap and thus opens the cap of the lighter, while for the closing of the cap a second pressing action is necessary which must be exerted upon the heated cap. It is obvious, therefore, that in using one of the known devices the manipulator of the lighter runs the risk of burning his finger.
Hence, the object of the present invention is the provision of a lighter, capable of combination with a fountain-pen or the like, which overcomes the aforesaid drawback. In other words, what I want to produce is a completely automatic lighter of this type which may be manipulated with ease and safety with one hand and without the slightest risk for the manipulator of the device to burn his finger.
To solve this problem I provide the cylindrical staif-like lighter body with rod-like longitudinally shiftable actuating means being at one end pivotally connected to the extinguishing cap which also serves as driver for the friction wheel by placing these shiftable actuating means under the control of a tension spring which at the end of each actuation automatically returns the shiftable actuating means to their starting position.
In order to make my invention more readily understood I will now proceed to describe it with the aid ofthe accompanying drawing which forms a part of thisspeciflcation and in which the same or corresponding numerals of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts. However, it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended can be showing the hollow extension of the staff-like lighter-body provided with an internally threaded opening;
Fig. 3 is a side view of a fountain-pen provided at both ends with externally threaded portions for fastening it in the hollow extension of the lighter;
Fig. 4 is a view of a lead pencil provided with a threaded portion for fastening it in the hollow extension of the lighter;
Fig. 5 is a view of the interiorly threaded auxiliary member by means of which the lighter, fountain-pen and lead pencil may be assembled to form one single unit.
In the drawing I is the fuel chamber of the pocket-lighter shaped like a cylindrical staff and having the thickness of the customary fountain- I pen. Mounted on the upper wall 2 of the staff is a bearing 3 in which is rotatably journaled by means of a shaft 6 a friction or abrading wheel 4 as well as an extinguishing cap 5, which latter in order to conform to the diameter of the staff is naturally of comparatively small size. The extinguishing cap 5 acts in known manner by means of a plate spring I upon the clawshaped side face of the abrading wheel, so that -whenever the cap is opened the abrading wheel is rotated causing the latter to draw sparks from the spark producing member 8 whereby the fuel saturated wick 9 will become inflamed. Because of its small size the extinguishing cap 5 will not be actuated directly but by means of the element I0 which is shiftably mounted on the staff I by means of a loop II and which at its upper end I2 is pivotally connected to the end of the extinguishing cap by means of a bolt I3. Attached to the element I0 is a tension spring I4 which automatically forces the element IIl back into its starting position after each actuation of the extinguishing cap. Spring I4 is arranged in a longitudinal recess I5 of the shaft I and suitably fastened to the upper wall 2 of the staff.
The longitudinal opening of the recess I5 in the staff I is covered up by the element ID, for which reason the spring I4 is completely enclosed in the recess, the latter serving as housing for the spring. For its convenient manipulation the element I ii is provided with a projection I6 which in the drawing is shown'with a fluted surface to further facilitate the operation of the device. The lower portion II of the shiftable element III is constructed after the manner of the well-known pocket clip for securing the lighter to the pocket of its owner.
As heretofore described the device is a completely automatic lighter which upon actuation of the element It! becomes lighted and which upon release of the pressure upon element Ill automatically closes because of the spring action of spring I4. However, it is also possible to change the device to a semiautomatic one by providing staff I with a recess l9 serving as catch for the ball l8 at the end of therclip ll when the latter is in its lowermost position, whereupon the lighter will remain inflamed until a pressure upon ball 88 disengages the ball from its position in catch l9 and thus enables spring H to close the cap.
The lighter body i is provided with a hollow extension 28 whose open end 2! is internally threaded to receive the externally threaded end 24 of a short-sized fountain-pen 22 or the threaded end 24 of a lead pencil 23, completing in this way either the fountain-pen or the lead pencil to the customary size. It is further contemplated to provide the fountain-pen 22 with a second exteriorly threaded portion 25, making it possible in this way to screw the threaded end 25 with pen 26 projecting from it into the hollow extension 20, the latter serving in this case as a protective housing for the pen.
The invention further provides a hollow sleevelike "auxiliary member 21 which is internally threaded and by means of which the lighter, fountain-pen and pencil may be assembled to form one single unit. For this purpose the founten-pen 22 is screwed into the hollow extension 20, after which the threaded portion 25 of the fountain-pen is fastened in one end of the auxiliary member 21 while the lead pencil 23 is screwed into the other end of it.
