To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that ll, FRANK RAUCH, a citizen of Jugo-Slavia, (and a declarant for United States citizenship), residing in Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pen and Cigar-Lighters, of which the following 1s a specification.
The main purpose of this invention is ,to provide a device for producing a flame, such as may be used to light a cigar, cigarette or the like, or as a torch, the device being combined with the cap of a fountain pen of the ordinary type.
Another purposeis to provide such devices in forms which are convenient to use, compact in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, and neat in appearance, being really indistinguishable from the -usual cap for which they may be substituted.
These and other objects, which will become more fully apparent as the description progresses, are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter fully described and shown inthe accompanying drawings, form ing an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view o-f the lighter as combined with a conventional type of fountain pen.

Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view, similar to Fig. 4 but sho-wing a modified' form of the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1.0 designates the body of a commercial type of plain or self-filling fountain pen, the exterior of which is screw-threaded slightly tapered or made conical in order to receive the usual cap and cause it to normally adhere with suliieient tension to remain in position, either acting as a guard or casing for the pen nib or point, or, if the pen is in use, as a prolongation of the body.
lIn the present invention a special cap 15 is provided, it being substantially of the same outside dimensions'and containing a slightly conical bore 16 litting the ends of the pen body and receptive of the pen point when in engagement.
The opposite, outer end of the cap contains a straight cylindrical bore 17 extending to an interior shoulder or abutment 18 and is open to the inner, smaller end of the bore 16.
Fitted snugly to the bore 17 is a cylinder 20, its open inner end resting against the shoulder 18, its outer end protruding somewhat beyond the corresponding end of the cap. lVithin the cylinder is a removable tank 21 having a closed lower end 22 and a similar closed upper end 23, except for openings further described, the plate 23 covering the upper end extending marginally outward to cover the end of the cylinder 20.
A small tube 24 is secured to the inner end end plate 22 near one side of the chamber, the tube extending through the head 23, above which it is curved toward thecenter l and finished with a beveled end 24, in which is inserted a wick 25, passing out at the open recess 26 formed in the wall of the tube, and into the interior of the tank so as to be saturated with combustible liquid entered through its open upper end.
Fixed to the opposite wall of the tube, and to the plate 22 is the curved wall of a flattened casing 28, its side elements being soldered their entire length, liquid tight, to the Walls of the tank 21, the walls of the casing being adapted to resiliently grasp and tightly engage a stick 30 of pyropho-ric material entered through an opening 31 in the inner end 22 of the tank.
A bent flat spring 32 is fastened to the interior of the casing immediately above the inner end 22, its upper bowed portion 33 being normally in contact with the pyrophoric material, while its extreme end is curved outwardly and is free to move below the plate 23, in which is formed an open elongated slot 34.
The tip or cover 35 for the cap is formed with an integral top 36 and has a bored opening4 37 containing a sleeve or bushing 38, adapted to neatly fit the extending end of the cylinder 20, a counterbored beading 39 formed at the end of the tip, being engageable over the eXtreme top of' the cap 20.
Fixed rigidly at the bottom of the bore 37 to the inner surface of the sleeve 38, is a semi-circular plate 40, from which eX- tends, centrally of the top tip and toward its open'end a spring element 41, bent outward, opposite to the plate 40 and forming a stop 42 adapted to make contact with the interior of the sleeve at a point sufficiently remote from its end as to avoid interference with the cylinder 20 when the tip is positioned on the cap.
Secured centrally to the spring element 41 is the shank of an abrader bar 44, the same being in its extending operative length equal to the lengthy of the chamber 20, and provided with teeth or serrations 45, preferably of ratchet .shape and adapted to act in the manner of a file when in contact with the pyrophoric material, the abrader entering the chamber through the slot 34, its point extending through an opening in the inner end wall of the chamber.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the same general structure is preserved, except the spring 32 is replaced by another flat spring 50 tensioned to spring outwardly or away from the stick 30 but which may be forced against the abrader 44, when it is withdrawn, by pressing the knob 51, eX- tending through the wall of the cap.
This knob is provided with a stem 52 in contact with the spring and is prevented from movement outward by a flange 53., thus enabling an operator to exert any desired pressure of the abrader against the pyrophoric material.
As the knob passes through the wall of the cylinderand then into the wall of the casing direct, no opening exists for leakage of the 'liquid contained in the tank. i
In operation,.the wick is entered intov the tube 24 and extended outward for a sho-rt distance, its inner end being free within the tank 21, which may be lightly packed with absorbent material, as cotton, and illed with a combustible liquid, as alcohol, gasolene or the like. f
The stick of pyrophoric material '30 is passed into its casing through the opening 31 and pressed toward the tube by the spring 32. i
The tip and its attached parts are applied to the extending part of the chamber, and as the tip and cap are identical in diameter and appearance, the joint is hardly perceptible, while the combined length is not noticeable.
When a light is desired, .the tip is pulled briskly outward, i ofli'; vthe cap, this movement causing the serrations of the abrader,
held tightly against the pyrophoric material, `to cause the same to emit a shower of 'caused by the insertion of the abrader, but
only upon its rapid retraction, due to the shape of the teeth.
It will also be evident that full v`and economical use of the pyrophoric material is obtained, as the abrader is not rigidly but yieldingly mounted, and spring pressed against the entire length of material during its movement.
' Having thus described my invention, and set forth the manner of its construction, and use, what I claim as new and desire-to secure ily Letters Patent, is
, 1. lightercomprising an inner and outer casing, pyrophoric material and a fiat spring disposed longitudinally in said inner casing, a tip engageable with said outer casing, and a yieldingly mounted abrader carried by said tip adapted to operate under the tension of said spring upon said pyrophoric material, when the tip is being withdrawn.
2. A lighter comprising an inner and outer casing, pyrophoric material and a flat spring secured lengthwise in said inner casing, a cover tip engageable with said outer casing, a spring in said tip, a bar mounted on the spring, and ratchet Iteeth on said bar adapted to be pressed into engagement with said pyrophoric material by said flat spring whereby sparks are produced on retraction of said bar and avoided upon its insertion.
3. A lighter comprising a cylindrical outer casing partially embedded in the end of a pen cap, a cover forming a prolongation of said cap engageable on theprotrudingend of said casing, a flattened casing Within the first named casing,- a Stick of pyrophoric material in ssaid inner casing, a serrated bar yieldinglji mounted in said cover and'adapted to enter the inner casing, and a bent fiat sprin fixed in the inner casing adapted to press t e teeth of said bar into abrading contact with said stick.
4. A lighter comprising a cylindrical outer casing partially embedded in the end of a pen cap, a cover forming a prolongation of said cap engageable( on the protruding end of said casing, a iattened casing extending the entire length within the first named casing, ya stick of pyrophoric material in said inner casing, a serrated bar yieldingly mounted in said cover and adapted to enter the inner casing, means for exerting pressure on said bar against said stick, and a tube open to said outer casing and bent to register with the end of. said stick, said tube containing a wick communicating With liquid in the space between said casings.
5. A cigar lighter comprising a pen cap, a container for liquids set in one end of said cap, and extending therebeyond, a cas ing in said container containing pyrophoric material, a Wick tube in said container, its outer end being contiguous to said material, a cover engageable on said container, a yieldinnr abrader carried by said cover, said abrader having ratchet shaped teeth, and means for pressing the teeth of said abrader in contact with the pyrophoric material during its retraction, whereby sparks are caused to ignite a Wick in said tube.
6. A cigar lighter comprising a pen cap, a container for liquids set in one end of said cap and extending therebeyond, a casing in said container containing pyrophoric material, a Wick tube in said container, its
outer end being contiguous t0 said material, a tip, a bushing in said tip fitted to engage the extending end of said container, a spring iXed in said bushing, an abrader carried by said spring, means in said casing for pressing said said abrader against said pyrophoric material and a guide in said container for the abrader.
