918,481. Injection moulding. FOSTER, YATES & THOM Ltd. Dec. 1, 1961 [Oct. 3, 1960], No. 33886/60. Class 87(2). An injection moulding machine consists of an injection cylinder 3 with a front plate 1, in front of which is a telescopic section comprising a fixed tubular part 4 connected to the front plate 1, a sleeve part 7 sliding on the part 4, and a nozzle part 8 sliding within the sleeve part 7. The nozzle is brought into sealing engagement with the mould orifice by means of fluid operated pistons 19, 20. The nozzle part 8 is kept in a forward position in the sleeve part 7 by the pressure of the plastic until it comes into contact with the mould, when the nozzle 8 is displaced rearwardly in the sleeve 7 and the channels 10 connect with the larger bore 11 allowing plastic to flow. As sleeve 7 slides forward over fixed portion 4 a cavity is left and when the nozzle 8 engages the mould and is displaced rearwardly this cavity is filled up. By suitable choice of diameters of parts 4 and 8, and the introduction of a valve in fixed part 4, a pressure can be built up inside sleeve 7 to assist injection. The apparatus may be used for high pressure short injection by plugging the end of the part 4 and providing radial apertures near the plugged end (see Fig. 3, not shown).
