Abstract
Hydroxocobalamin is obtained by reducing cyanocobalamin in the absence of a catalyst in an acid medium of pH of 1.5 to 2.0 by means of ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation in a medium of a pH equal to or greater than 8. In an example ferrous chloride in dilute hydrochloric acid is added to aqueous cyanocobalamin to give a pH of 1.8. The mixture is then heated to a temperature below 50 DEG C. while being concentrated in vacuo. Soda is then added to bring the pH to 8.5 and the ferrous oxide precipitate recovered. The filtrate is then oxidised by bubbling with air or oxygen, diluted with acetone and the hydroxocobalamin separated and purified by chromatography.
