An evacuating chamber in a package filling and closing machine generally as described in in the parent Specification includes a head piece having heat sealing jaws and a package holder mounted on it, a bell for airtight application against said head piece and means for moving the package upwards resiliently relative to the holder, the object being to position the tops of packages of varying height between the heat sealing jaws. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the lower part of the package holder is formed by plates 101, 102 and is freely supported slidably on the upper part 103 so that it can move vertically. A pair of spring buffer devices 108 are mounted on each side of the plates 101. When the bell is lifted up to the position shown to enclose the holder, a pair of shoulders 107 on the bell contact the buffers 108 and lift the holder together with the package until the upper edge of the package contacts stop members 104 integral with the part 103. The remainder of the motion of the bell is then taken up by compression of the buffers. As an alternative to the above the buffers may be mounted on the bell. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the package is lifted in the holder by means of a resilient block 117 attached to the bell.
