Abstract
918,101. Copy-milling. McKAY MACHINE CO. Feb. 24, 1959, No. 6257/59. Class 83 (3). A machine tool comprises means for relatively moving a rotary tool 26 and work clamping means 74, 75 to machine the periphery of a workpiece. The mounting and driving means for a milling cutter 26 are enclosed by cylindrical casings 10, 12 having access doors 27. The cutter projects vertically from the face of a work-table 18 and is rotated by a variable speed motor 51 driving through a belt 52 and a flexible shaft 53. The cutter spindle 50 is carried by a slide 41 movable in guides on a plate 31 rotatable in bearings 29 by a variable speed motor 35 driving through chain gearing 36 and worm gearing 34. The slide 41 carries an adjustable follower 60 held against a cam 62 by springs 63 so that the cutter follows a predetermined path on a reduced scale. If an arcuate path is desired, the slide 41 can be locked in an off-centre position by an adjustable linkage 66 which is normally disconnected. The work-holder comprises a jaw 74 adjusted against springs 82 by a graduated screw device 79, and locked by a wing-nut 83. The other jaw 75 is operated by a toggle-linkage 86 actuated by fluid-pressure means controlled by a hand-lever. During cutting, the operator has one hand on the lever and the other depresses a motor-start button, thus preventing him from injury by the cutter. To enable the minimum amount of materal to be removed from a workpiece, a stepped gauge 99 is rotated by a knurled grip 101 so that a scale 102 denotes the maximum depth of material to be removed. A bar 94 is then advanced until a stop 98 thereon engages the set gauge step, and the end of the work is pushed, with the help of a spring-pressed rod 109, against a stop-pin projecting from the bar 94. Chips fall into a tray 113 and are drawn downwardly by suction created by vanes 117 and pass through guides 115, 116 to a bin. The motors 35, 51 may be controlled by switches 119 actuated by dogs carried by the plate 31 to determine its angle of rotation and to return it to its initial position when cutting is complete. The vice may be mounted above the table to enable the cutter to swing through 360 degrees. The height of the milling-cutter may be varied during its swing.
