770,656. Copy-milling. BRIDGWATER MACHINE TOOL CO. March 17, 1955 [March 17, 1954], No. 7827/54. Class 83 (3). A copy-milling machine comprises a toolspindle on a head 20, Fig. 1, movable to-andfrom a driven work-table 14, and a follower 63 contacting an endless belt 65 in a housing 19 having a contoured edge to determine the outline of the work by moving the head 20. The head 20 is adjustable laterally by screws 145, 146 on a plate 87 which is angularly adjustable on a slide 22 adjustable vertically on a slide 16 moved radially of the rotary table 14 by hydraulic means 56. A second belt for controlling tilting movements of the cutter 21 is mounted in a housing 23. The table is rotated by a variable-speed motor through a bevel ring-gear on the table with which meshes a bevel-pinion which rotates a driving-roll for each of the belts. The endless plastic or metallic belt 65, Fig. 13, is driven through sprockets 71 or 71A and is steadied near the tracer 63 by rolls 73, 74. The belt may have recesses P to cut pockets in the work. The belt may be cut by following round a photographic loft-template with a tracer mounted in place of the cutter 21 to guide an air-driven router mounted in place of the tracer 63 and of the same diameter. The cutter-spindle 89A is rotated by a motor through a shaft 101 and gears 99, 100. The spindle carries a piston-head at its upper end by which it can be raised within a casing 85 to withdraw the cutter from the work. The lower end of the spindle rotates in a quill 92 carrying a block 135 which limits the lower position of the cutter according to the setting of a nut 128 on a screwed adjusting-rod 129. The plate 87 is rocked on guides 151, 153 by tapes connected to the ends of an hydraulic cylinder 157 controlled by an hydraulic valve 172 and a tracer contacting the belt in the housing 23. In a modified machine, the table is reciprocated by hydraulic means and the rolls are driven by a pinion engaging a rack on the bottom of the table. Specification 746,543 is referred to.
