Abstract

The process of the parent Specification (in which fibres composed of polymers consisting essentially of an optically active form of gammamethyl glutamate are made by polymerizing an optically active gamma-methyl glutamate N-carboxy anhydride in an organic solvent for the polypeptide formed, the polypeptide being composed of at least 90% by weight of units of the optically active glutamate ester, extruding a solution of the polypeptide while it is still in the solvated state into a setting medium so that the polypeptide is in the alpha configuration on extrusion, and stretching the resultant fibre while it is still in the alpha configuration thereby converting the polypeptide substantially into the beta configuration and orienting the fibre along its axis) is modified in that the fibres produced consist essentially of an optically active form of gamma-ethyl glutamate made by polymerizing an optically active gamma-ethyl glutamate N-carboxy anhydride. The polymers used may be copolymers of gamma-ethyl-L- or -D-glutamate with not more than 10% by weight of one or more other N-carboxy anhydrides such as the anhydrides of leucine, phenylalanine, norleucine, isoleucine, gamma-methyl glutamate or gammabenzyl glutamate. In an example, a 7,5% solution of poly-gamma-ethyl-L-glutamate in a 70/30 v/v methylene chloride/ethylacetate mixture is wet spun into a 1:1 v/v ether/methanol mixture, the resultant filaments passed through a water wash bath and stretched 110%.
