A solution consisting essentially of a polyarylsulphone in an organic solvent is wet spun into a coagulating bath consisting of 5 to 90% by volume of the solvent and 95 to 10% by volume of a liquid in which the polyarylsulphone is insoluble and with which the solvent is miscible. The organic solvent may be a halohydrocarbon such as chloroform, trichloroethylene, dichloroethylene, dichloromethane. monochlorobenzene or orthodichlorobenzene, The liquid in which the polymer is insoluble may be a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having not more than 5 carbon atoms in the molecule. The polyarylsulphone may have a relative viscosity of 1.6 to 4.2 measured at 30‹ C. on a 1% by weight solution in chloroform. The filaments formed in the coagulating bath may subsequently be contacted with a non-solvent for the polymer which is miscible with the spinning solution solvent. The contacting may be effected in a second bath maintained at 50‹ to 100‹ C. The filaments after leaving the coagulating bath and while still wet may be stretched, e.g. by 100 to 300%. They may be stretched after having been contacted with the non-solvent for the polymer. The recurring units of the polyarylsulphone may have the formula
