Abstract

Oxide, hydrated oxide, and chromate pigments are rendered organophilic by reacting an aqueous suspension of the pigment with a solution of an anionic surface-active agent, acidifying, separating the pigment, drying, and, if desired, disintegrated the product thus obtained. The surface-active agent may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a fatty acid which may contain -OH groups, e.g. ricinoleic acid, or which has at least 8 carbon atoms. The salts of industrial stearine or of partly polymerized unsaturated fatty acids may also be employed. Also suitable are alkali metal salts of alkyl-, aryl-, or alkyl-aryl-sulphonic acids. The acidification may be effected by a mineral acid, e.g. HCl, H2SO4 or H3PO4, or by strong organic acids, e.g. acetic acid. Pigments referred to are titanium dioxide, red and yellow iron oxides, green chromium oxide, red bauxite (obtained by heating bauxite), aluminium oxide, zinc chromate, zinc tetroxychromate, lead chromate, and basic lead chromate, barium chromate and strontium chromate.
