A machine for disintegrating dustbin refuse and like dry waste products comprises a cylindrical perforated screen 11 to the interior of which the waste products are fed by means of a conveyer 12, the screen being rotatable about its longitudinal axis which is either horizontal or slightly tilted out of the horizontal, and cutting and grinding rotors 15, 16 and 17 which are rotatable about axes substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the screen and in the direction opposite to that in which the screen is rotated, to effect cutting and grinding in co-operation with the screen. Rotor 15 comprises an openwork structure of helical blades 15a disposed between discs 15b while rotors 16, 17 comprise drums 16b, 17b carrying blades 16a, 17a. Each rotor 15 to 17 is free to revolve on adjustable and adjustably-mounted arms 18 about a shaft 19 which is substantially parallel to, but not coincident with, the longitudinal axis of the screen; alternatively, each rotor, or all three together, may be mounted on a resilient element with freedom to move in a direction substantially along a radius of the screen 11. Waste products retained within the screen after treatment by the rotors 15 to 17 are lifted by scoops 24 on to a return conveyer 21 which transfers the material to a conveyer 25 having a magnetic separator pulley 26 adapted to divide the material into two parts, the magnetic part being delivered into a shoot 27 for removal from the machine and the non-magnetic part being delivered via a shoot 28 into a hammer mill or the like 29 from which it is returned to the input conveyer 12. The conveyer 25 passes an inspection platform 31 where appropriate parts of the waste products can be manually picked out or sorted into shoots 32. The treated waste products which fall through the screen are carried away by a conveyer 33. A further conveyer 35 removes dust and small particles which fall through the screen perforations as soon as the waste products are introduced into the screen.
