Abstract

917,185. Torsional vibration dampers. HAUSHALTER, F. L. July 22, 1960, No. 25695/60. Class 108(3). In a torsional vibration dampener of the kind comprising a resilient annular insert which is compressed between a pulley hub 13 and a concentric inertia ring 15 the insert comprises a thin metal strip 10, e.g. of steel, to each side of which is permanently bonded, e.g. by curing or adhesive, a number of resilient -elements formed of a rubber, or other elastomer, the strip then being bent to circular form. A continuous resilient strip may replace the elements 11 on either side of of the metal strip 10 or separate continuous strips may be bonded to opposite sides of the metal strip. For assembly two spaced sections 17, 18, Fig. 6, locate the inertia member concentrically about the hub 13, a tool 23, placed in contact with the metal strip 10, then being used to force the insert into the annular space 22 where it remains elongated axially and under compression and forms friction bonds with the corresponding cylindrical surfaces of the hub 13 and the inertia member 18. After assembly a portion of the metal strip 10 protrudes axially as shown in Fig. 1 mainly for cooling purposes. In an alternative arrangement the elastic material is bonded to a preformed continuous metal band.
