917,181. Hollow rollers. KLEINEWEFERS, P., [trading as KLEINEWEFERS SOHN,JOH.]. Nov. 24, 1960 [Nov. 24, 1959], No. 40456/60. Class 34 (1). A heated roll comprises a barrel with a central bore for a fluid heating medium having resistance means provided in a central portion of the bore to restrict the passage of heat whereby when the heating medium is passed through the bore transfer of heat from the medium to the roll is greater at the end portion of the roll than in the central portion to minimize temperature variations of the outer surface of the roll arising from loss of heat at the ends of the roll. A hollow roller comprises a one-piece barrel 1, Fig. 1, and bearing journals 2 having a stepped bore 5, 6, 7 to produce different wall thicknesses to vary the resistance to heat transfer, which heat is supplied by steam from an apertured pipe 8. In other embodiments, the barrel has either a smooth bore or different wall thicknesses, and the bore has a tubular heatresisting insert constructed of a material of poor thermal conductivity, e.g. steel or slag wool, and in a further modification the insert may have a system of chambers or tubes through which a gaseous or liquid medium is circulated to enable variation of the temperature of the surface of the barrel from outside the barrel. In a further embodiment an aluminium insert 10, Fig. 3, in a bore 6 has a chamber 11 to which a cooling or insulating liquid is adjustably supplied through insulated pipes 13, 14, the insert being shielded from the heating medium from the pipe 8 by an insulating layer 12. The insert is sealed in the bore by a stuffing-box-like packing 15 and a connecting head 15, Fig. 5, provides separate flows of the heating and cooling media. The pipes 13, 14 open into annular chambers 19, 20 mounted in a fixed supply head 18 on a rotatable cylindrical member 17 of the connecting head which in turn is mounted on a flange 16 on the end face of the journal 2. The heating pipe rotates with the roll and is supplied from a head 24 mounted on a rotatable tube 25 having supply and outlet pipes 26, 27.
