Abstract
917,171. Abrasive blasting. BELL INTERCONTINENTAL CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 3228/60. Class 60. A blasting machine for cleaning, reconditioning, descaling, deburring or otherwise surface-treating elongated articles comprises a stationary blast housing 10 open at both ends and provided with blastant-throwing devices 30, a stationary housing 15 communicating with one end of the housing 10 and extending therefrom sufficiently to accommodate the full length of the longest workpiece to be treated, and a housing 35 movable from a position on the side of housing 10 opposite to housing 15 to a position within the housing 15. The movable housing 35 has rollers running on tracks 38 and is moved by a chain 75 driven by a power unit 78. With the housing 35 positioned within the housing 15, a workpiece 28, e.g. an engine crankcase casting, is loaded from above or from either side on to a car 25 having rollers running on tracks 20 and movable by a chain 79 driven by a power unit 80 (not shown). The housing 35 is then moved out from housing 15 to a position in which its end abuts a stationary end panel 40 having air inlet ducts; the end closure 16 of the housing 15 has air outlet manifolds leading to conduits 19 connected through suction ducts to a dust collector. The car 25 is then moved to carry the workpiece 28 through the blast housing 10 into the housing 15 and thereafter back through the blast housing 10 into the housing 35, this being repeated as often as necessary. The controls for the power untis 78, 80 may be manual or semi-automatic, and arranged to run the car 25 back and forth any predetermined number of times. When blasting is finished, the housing 35 is moved into the housing 15 and the workpiece unloaded from the car. Spent blastant is received in hoppers 50 delivering to a pair of tandem disposed reciprocating flight conveyers 52. The conveyers deliver to a screw conveyer 54 delivering to an elevator 55 in turn delivering to a conveyer 56 discharging into a sizing separator 58. Oversize debris is discharged to disposal through conduit 59, and fine debris is discharged to disposal through conduit 60. Removable blastant passes through conduit 62 to an elevator 64 and thence by conveyer 66 to hoppers 68, 69 from which it flows by gravity through conduits 70 to the blast devices 30.
