Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions e.g. aqueous compositions suitable for use as a gargle or mouthwash, and having germicidal and surface anaesthetic properties comprise phenol, an alkali metal phenolate, an alkali metal tetraborate and glycerine. Preferred compositions comprise 1.0 to 4.05% by weight phenol, 0.41 to 3.69% sodium phenolate, 0.15 to 1.35% sodium tetraborate and 0.4 to 3.63% glycerine the balance being water and, optionally, conventional colouring, flavouring and sweetening agents. The pH of the compositions is preferably in the range 7 to 9.
