Abstract

917,002. Discharging liquids by gaseous pressure. BURNESS CORLETT & PARTNERS Ltd. March 30, 1961 [April 7, 1960], No. 12440/60. Class 102(2). In the pumping of liquids from enclosed spaces by utilising the vapour pressure of the liquid itself, a fluid layer is interposed between the liquid and the vapour to act as a piston; the layer, which may be of nitrogen gas, provides insulation between the liquid and vapour thereby reducing condensation of the vapour. A ship installation for the carriage of liquid methane or methane and ethane comprises a number of insulated tanks having interconnected closed upper neck portions and wells at their bases. A liquid circulating main interconnects the tanks and means for loading, discharging and transferring liquid from one tank to another are provided. A proportion of the discharged liquid may be diverted into a heat exchanger to produce vapour for discharging further liquid.
