916,960. Cooling electromagnetic couplers. HEENAN & FROUDE Ltd. Oct. 6, 1961 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 35970/61. Class 35. An eddy current coupler comprises a rotor drum having peripheral apertures through which coolant-fluid passes to deflectors which return the fluid to the rotor. Fig. 1 shows an eddy current-coupler of the type described in detail with reference to Fig. 1 of Specification 887,964 but modified for improved cooling. The coupler comprises a first shaft 9 carrying an electromagnetic rotor 57 on a spider 15, a second shaft 11 carrying an interdigital rotor 23, and a stationary field coil 39. Cooling liquid is introduced via a conduit 59 and apertures in a stationary boss 56 to a trough 73 formed in the rotor spider. From there it passes through apertures 61 and is thrown against a stationary deflector 63 which returns the liquid to the rotor so that the liquid passes between the rotor drum and the deflector ring several times before it emerges at 69 from the base of the coupler. The deflector extends around 240 degrees of the periphery of the rotor, changing in shape progressively to that shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8. The deflector ring may have only one arch such as 63 or more than the two, 63, 67, shown.
