A vehicle-actuated road pad comprises a casing closed at the top by two plates 47, 48 (Fig. 3), normally urged to substantially coplanar positions, e.g. by springs 50, and rockable about axes 50a parallel to the neighbouring edges of the plates, mechanical means being housed in the casing for amplifying a comparatively small depression of the plates in order to transmit a larger movement to a remote mechanism, e.g. a gate, to be operated. The mechanical means may be a system of pulleys 57 or levers 70-77 (Fig. 6), co-operating with a cable 23 which runs to the remote mechanism. In an alternative means for biasing the plates, pairs of levers 68 (Fig. 4) are welded to the respective plates and each lever extends under the other plate where it is provided with a depending projection which holds one end of a compression spring 69. The plates are hinged together at 49 and are adapted to be easily removable from the casing.
