Abstract

523,600. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. MILLS, J. E., MILLS, R. G., JENKINS, J. DAVIES-, and OWEN, T. F. Dec. 7,1938, No. 35672. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXVI] A hydraulic or other fluid-pressure press used for the assembly of components having a relative interference fit is fitted with a control valve 3 electrically operated in such a manner that the movement of the ram 4 is arrested if a load is required higher than a predetermined value or lower than a predetermined value. The valve 3 is maintained open by the energization of a solenoid 5 in a circuit 2 which comprises push buttons 7, 8 and switches 9, 14, 18, the switch 9 being in parallel with the switch 14. The switches 14, 18 are controlled by a pressure gauge 15 and the switch 14 is normally open, but is closed at a pressure corresponding to the " low " predetermined pressure, and the switch 18 is normally closed but is opened at the high pressure limit. When the button 7 is operated to close the circuit and the ram 4 descends, an adjustable tappet rod 10, which is supported by a sleeve 13 on the ram 4 controlled by springs 13a, 13b, acts on the switch 9 to open the switch. The control valve is operated to stop movement of the ram at this time ; (a) if the low limit switch 14 has not closed owing to the reaching of the predetermined low pressure ; (b) if the high limit switch 18 has opened. When the push button 7 is operated to close the circuit 2 a switch 19 in parallel therewith is operated by the solenoid 5 to maintain the circuit closed.
