Abstract
916,299. Automatic circuit-breakers. CRABTREE & CO. Ltd., J. A. May 25, 1960 [April 2, 1960], No. 43802/61. Divided out of 905,639. Class 38 (5). In a moulded-case circuit-breaker having overload-responsive electromagnetically-tripped mechanism, such as that of Specification 905,639, the magnet frame is reduced in crosssectional area in the vicinity of the armature to provide an additional shortened path of high reluctance to ensure operation under shortcircuit conditions. In the circuit-breaker shown, overload current through the coil 16 causes a magnetic plunger 6 to be pulled towards a polepiece 18 with a time delay. An air gap 15x between the polepiece 18 and the end of the magnet frame 13 ensures that the flux produced by the coil 16 passes through a path provided by the plunger 6, the polepiece 18, the armature 15, the frame 13 and a sleeve 12 causing the armature to be attracted and the circuitbreaker to be tripped. The frame 13 is provided with a hole 13x to produce a highreluctance portion so that when a short-circuit occurs and instantaneous tripping is required a shortened flux path exists from the reduced end of the plunger 6 (in the position shown) across to the portion of the frame 13 between the hole 13x and the gap 15x, thence to the armature 15, the frame 13 and the sleeve 12, so that the armature 15 is attracted to cause tripping of the circuit - breaker.
