Abstract

916,264. Dropping from aircraft. SIREN. Feb. 1, 1960 [Jan. 31, 1959], No. 3478/60. Class 9 (2). [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIII] Means for dropping loads from aircraft comprises a clamping device adapted to hold against a runway mounted on the floor of the aircraft, a support means A movable along the runway, the device having a clamping element 12 which is capable of exerting a clamping force on the support means A in a given direction and which is carried by an arm 11 mounted on a support 7 for pivotal movement from an operative clamping position to an inoperative retracted position about an axis W which is oblique relative to the given direction, the obliqueness being in such direction that the pivoting of the arm from the clamping position to the retracted position automatically causes the clamping element to move away from and release the support means. As shown, the clamping element is a screw which is threaded into the arm 11. The arm 11 is biased by means of a spring 16 to the position in which the clamping element is released from the support means A, the movement in this direction being limited by the abutment of the arm against a lug 15a on the support 7. The position of the arm when clamped is determined by the abutment of a lug 15 carried by the arm against the support. The support 7 is adjustably fixed to a stand 1 by means of two rods 8, each of which extend through aligned apertures 5 in the stand and a transverse aperture in the support 7. A plurality of the clamping devices are used to secure the support means to the runway and one application is in an aeroplane in which the support means is to be parachuted to the ground. The support means is normally held by an abutment to the runway, the clamping devices preventing movement perpendicular to the runway; when the abutment is withdrawn a pull applied to the support means by a parachute, which causes it to move longitudinally of the runway, moves the arm 11 of each clamping device about its pivot and as soon as the clamping force of the element 12 against the support means is sufficiently reduced the spring 16 pivots the arm quickly to its retracted position.
