An actuating device for a control cable 12 comprises a handle 34 on a sleeve 33 surrounding a cylinder 29 to which the end of the cable is attached, the sleeve 33 having an extension 35 formed with a conical grooved cam surface 36a coacting through balls 49 with a corresponding grooved surface on a deformable collet 45 so that the latter is compressed to grip the cylinder 29 and thus couple the cylinder to the handle 34 only when the latter is pulled. The cable end is thus normally free to move to accommodate changes in length caused by temperature differentials or by flexure of the supporting structure thereby avoiding accidental operation of the device 11 to which it is connected. The conical surface of the collet 45 has eight ball-receiving grooves between which are longitudinal splits extending approximately five-sixths of the length of the collet so that it forms an eight-jawed chuck around the cylinder 29. As shown, the device comprises a quick release mechanism for an aircraft braking parachute attached to a ball-ended clevis 25 which is retained against a fixed curved arm 14 by a rotatable eccentric 17 locked by a prong on a pivoted arm 20. The arm 20 is loaded by a spring 24 and attached to the cable 12 so that pulling the latter allows the eccentric to rotate and release the clevis. The cable is tensioned by a stack of three springs 52 acting between a flange on the cylinder 29 and an end cap on the collet 45, which is thus urged to its open position against an abutment ring 40 held in the housing 38. The collet has an annular guide flange which fits the extension 35 and holds a spring 55 against a collar pinned to the end of the extension 35 so that the latter is also urged against the ring 40.
