A drill chuck of the kind comprising a tool socket 9 held against relative rotation in an outer socket member 2 and provided with adjustable detent means which normally prevents relative axial motion of the tool socket relative to the outer socket member, but which yields to release the socket for such axial motion when the axial force exerted by the drill upon the socket exceeds a limit determined by the said detent means, is characterized in that the detent means comprises a detent rod 10 connected to the tool socket 9 and provided near its rear end with a peripheral groove 11 in which engage detent balls 12 partially located within an annular gap formed between a stop ring shoulder 13 and a pressure ring 14 which is pressed against the detent balls by an adjustable pressure spring 15 which is adjusted by an abutment ring 16 screwed into the outer socket member 2. Movement of the rod 10 rearwardly moves a member 20, which carries a transverse pin 22, to move and extend sleeve 24 to indicate the position of the rod 10. Movement of the sleeve 24 rearwardly uncovers an indicating ring 25 which may be a coloured ring, luminous, or may contain radio-active substances to actuate a suitable control instrument. The rearward movement of the rod 10 may operate optical and/or acoustic and/or electrical means for stopping a drilling operation. The socket 9 and outer socket member 2 may be constituted as a separate unit which is engaged with a shank 26 by means of a quick release chuck. The shank 26 is integral with an outer housing 1 which receives the tubular extension of the outer socket member 2 with a non-rotatable connection. Balls 4 lock into a groove 3 when a spring biased sleeve 5 is moved rearwardly. A spring biased stop ring 7 is engaged by the end of the outer socket member 2.
