Abstract

1,161,267. Dental handpieces. KALTENBACH & VOIGT. 7 Sept., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40891/67. Heading A5R. A dental handpiece comprises (i) a device for holding a dental tool (e.g. a drill), the device being situated in the forward region of the handpiece and being arranged to be axially displaceable in opposition to the pressure of a spring to release the tool, (ii) an outer sleeve extending rearwardly of the holding device and being provided, adjacent the rearward end of the holding device, with an aperture and (iii) a release device in the form of a lever adapted to engage the holding device to effect said axial displacement of the gripping means, the lever being freely insertable in and removable from the aperture, and an edge of the aperture providing a bearing abutment for the lever when the lever applies a force in opposition to the spring force. As illustrated, the handpiece comprises an outer sleeve 1 which forms a handgrip and within which is rotatably mounted a driving shaft 2 adapted to be connected to a dental motor. Fixed in the driving shaft is a gripping sleeve 4 for a dental drilling tool 5, the gripping sleeve forming part of a holding device 3 the rear end 3a of which comprises a pressure ring 6 surrounding the driving shaft and connected to the gripping sleeve by a pin 7 which is guided in slots 8 formed longitudinally in the driving shaft. Surrounding the driving shaft is a coil spring 9 which bears at one end against a collar 10 integral with the driving shaft and at the other end against the pressure ring thereby to bias the gripping sleeve so that conical jaws 4a on the gripping sleeve are compressed by the conical end portion of a sleeve 11 fixed to the front end 2a of a driving shaft. Connected to the outer sleeve of the handpiece by screw 13 is an insert plate 14 having an aperture 12 through which may be inserted a releasing tool 16 in the form of an angled lever the shorter arm of which is adapted to contact the pressure ring to effect axial displacement of the gripping sleeve relative to the driving shaft thereby to release the dental tool. In the region of the aperture, the insert plate has a recess 15 of reduced wall thicknesses to provide hearing edges about which the releasing tool may pivot.
