Abstract

The olefinic bond of an a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde or ketone is selectively hydrogenated by treating the unsaturated compound with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising rhodium and/or ruthenium, and terminating the reaction when the olefinic bond is saturated. The product is the corresponding saturated aldehyde or ketone. Examples of the aldehydes and ketones which may be used as starting materials are mesityl oxide, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, vinylmethylketone, phorone, cinnamic aldehyde, benzalacetophenone and 2,4-hexadiene-1-al. The reaction temperature may be in the range from - 10 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. and if desired a solvent may be present. The catalyst may be supported on a conventional support and may be in the form of powder, pellets or granules. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 816,151.
