Abstract

A supported ruthenium hydrogenation catalyst is promoted with another platinum group metal, preferably Pt, Rh or Pd, the Ru being at least 20 wt. per cent of the total catalytic metals. Numerous Ru compounds are listed, but the use of RuCl3, in conjunction with, e.g. K2PtCl4, Na2PdCl4 or RhCl3, is preferred. When the support is BaSO4, CaCO3 or TiO2, the activity of the catalyst may be increased by ageing; other supports mentioned are C, Al2O3, SiO2 (including kieselguhr and synthetic gel) and bentonite. Specification 867,689 is referred to.ALSO:A supported ruthenium catalyst is promoted with another platinum group metal, preferably Pt, Rh or Pd and used to convert (a) the following aldehydes or ketones, e.g. to the corresponding alcohols: acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, nheptaldehyde, laevulose and dextrose; (b) toluene to methylcyclohexane.
