Abstract
The furfural substituted carbonyl compounds produced by the aldolic condensation of furfural and an aldehyde or ketone followed by dehydration, are catalytically hydrogenated to give the tetrahydrofurfuryl-substituted alcohols, in the fluid state under superatmospheric pressure at a temperature below 100 DEG C. and without the use of an added solvent. The preferred catalyst is nickel and it may be used on a carrier such as silica gel, alumina or charcoal. If the product to be hydrogenated is solid at the temperature to be used its melting point may be lowered by the addition of a suitable quantity of the hydrogenated product. In the examples (a) fural acetophenone, prepared by condensation of furfural and acetophenone in alkaline medium followed by distillation, is hydrogenated at 28-30 DEG C. in the presence of Raney nickel to give 1-phenyl-3-tetrahydrofuryl propanol; (b) furyl acrolein, prepared by condensation of furfural and acetaldehyde in alkaline medium followed by distillation is catalytically hydrogenated to give 2-tetrahydrofuryl propionic aldehyde; and (c) difural acetone, obtained from furfural and acetone, is hydrogenated to give 1,5-bis-tetrahydrofurfuryl-pentanol-(3).
