Abstract

915,198. Pile drivers. DE LONG CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 35568/59. Class 68 (2). A marine pile-driving apparatus comprises a pontoon 10 with two lateral extensions 14 at one end and four legs 16, each of which can be driven by a mechanism 22 into the marine bottom 62. At one end of the pontoon is a slot 24, and mounted on each side of the slot is a cantilevered structure 30 which extends over the end of the pontoon. Mounted on the structures 30 are two columns 34, spanned by a bridge 36, which can be driven up and down the columns by a bridge-jacking mechanism 38, and positioned in the structures are fluid pressure operated units 60 which operate guide shoes 56. Depending centrally from the bridge is a pile driving head 40 which has a pileengaging collar 46, and a conical funnel 48. Projecting laterally from one side of the bridge 36 is a platform 50 which carries a swivelling crane 52, and suspended under the bridge are two cables 54 which have eyelets at their lower ends. In operation, the pontoon is towed into position, the legs 16 put down and a pile 64 floated into the slot 24. A collar 70 which has trunnions 72 is clamped around the pile and the bridge 36 is raised to lift the pile into a vertical position, just above the marine bottom as shown in Fig. 6. The guides 56 are moved into position and the pile lowered on to the bottom. The bridge 36 is then driven down the columns and forces the pile into the ground. The crane 52 is used to operate a grab, through the opening 48 to remove soil from inside the pile. The load on the pile can be increased by pumping water into tanks 32 in the structures 30.
