Abstract

915,176. Sewing-machines. WINBERG, R. W. Nov. 17, 1960 [Nov. 24, 1959], No. 39499/60. Class 112. To improve the feeding of multi-layered material a sewing-machine having a feed dog is also provided with a driven feed wheel. The bifurcated presser foot 50 is pivoted by two pivot-pins 51 to the two arms 46a of a mounting bracket 44 which is secured by a screw 42 to the spring-biased presser bar 22. The feed wheel 54 is journalled in a carrier 60 disposed between the arms 46a and connected to the mounting bracket 44 for vertical movement by U-shaped link bars 64, 66 pivoted to the carrier and the bracket. A bias lever 76 secured to the link 66 is urged by a spring 78 encircling the screw 42 to press, the feed wheel downwardly towards the work. The compression of the spring may be altered by a nut 80 to vary the ratio of the pressures of the feed wheel and the presser foot bearing on the throat plate. The feed wheel has a groove 88 which matches the edge radius of a resilient idler wheel 90 journalled beneath the needle plate 32. The feed wheel 54 is driven in timed relationship with the feed dog of the machine by a flexible shaft 98 connected directly to the feed wheel and driven from the main shaft of the machine through a variable radius pulley and a speedreduction unit (Fig. 1, not shown). As the presser foot tends to hold the material in place when the feed dog is in the inactive portion of its cycle the material exerts a drag on the feed wheel and on the flexible shaft. Intermittently, this drag is overcome by movement of the feed dog through its driving stroke so that the shaft 98 imparts motion to the feed wheel, which is thus driven intermittently. It is also stated that the construction produces a good chaining-off action as the wheels 54, 90 contact the material on the stitching path. When a particular seam is completed and the material passes out the top and bottom threads remain in the grip of the feed wheel 54 and the idler 90 and are pulled smoothly out of their spools to produce a chain. When the next piece is sewn the chain is then attached thereto by the normal sewing operation.
