Abstract

915,175. Seat adjustments. HOSTESS TUBULAR EQUIPMENT Ltd., and DOBSON Ltd., W. E. & F. Oct. 3, 1961 [Oct. 18, 1960], No. 35623/60. Class 52 (2). In a chair or stool of the kind in which the seat is vertically adjustable to suit the user, the seat 11 is supported by a vertically disposed hydraulic cylinder and piston assembly 12 having a transfer port 26 for by-passing the piston, the transfer port is under the control of a one-way valve which permits the seat to be raised but automatically closes to maintain the seat in any position to which it has been raised, even when under load, and means, consisting of an actuating rod 29 operated by a lever 34 pivotally mounted under the seat 11, are provided for opening and holding open the valve 27 when desired in order to allow the seat to be lowered and then permit the valve to close automatically to maintain the seat in the position to which it has been lowered. The transfer port 26 is formed through the head 25 of the piston and the one-way valve controlling it is of the spring-pressed ball type. The actuating rod 29 is biased away from the valve by a spring 36. The hydraulic cylinder 13 is vertically disposed in a socket 14 in the centre of a base frame 10 and the piston has a tubular piston-rod 17 which extends upwardly beyond the upper end of the cylinder and has the seat 11 secured thereto.
