Abstract

914,690. Gun aiming devices. CADILLAC GAGE CO. June 11, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 20040/59. Class 92. A gun aiming device, e.g. for a gun 12, Fig. 1, mounted on a tank turret 10, comprises a left and right telescopic tube sight 15 mounted to move with the gun, the left telescope having a vertical line reticule 21, Fig. 2, for aiming the gun in the horizontal plane and the right telescope having a curved line reticule 22, Fig. 6, for aiming the gun in elevation, the reticule 22 being a predetermined curve for particular ammunition designed to make a super-elevation correction without requiring to know the range of the target. The gun is aimed by traversing the turret 10 until the reticule 21 crosses the target and then elevating or depressing the gun to cross the curve of the right reticule 22. To provide for different ammunition used, a number of reticules 22 are provided and the optical system is such that by operating a selected light, the appropriate reticule can be projected into the field of view. Alternatively, the different reticules 22 may be provided on a disc which can be rotated to bring the appropriate reticule into the telescope tube. The curved reticule is formed by taking a series of targets R 1 -R 4 , Fig.. 1, at known ranges, plotting the points 1-1, Fig. 5, as seen in the right telescope, calculating the superelevation correction necessary for the various targets and plotting the points 1<SP>1</SP>-4<SP>1</SP> to provide the curve 22.
