Abstract
914,368. Securing freight containers to vehicles. NATIONAL RESEARCH CO. Nov. 13, 1959 [May 4, 1959], No. 38597/59. Class 78 (4). A fastening for attaching a freight container 10, Fig. 2, to a platform 6 of a vehicle, comprises members 9 and 5 attached respectively to the container and the vehicle and a key 11. As the key 11 is inserted to lock the members 9, 5 together it is rotated so that a lug 11b which is eccentric on the shaft of the key follows a guideway within the two members and comes to rest behind a wall 51 of the member 5. The key may be withdrawn from both members or merely moved to an unlocked position in which it is withdrawn from the member 9. Surfaces 19, 20, serve to guide a sloping face of the member 9 into its correct relationship with the member 5. The sloping face of the member 9 may also co-operate with guide structures in the hold of a ship. Fig. 9 shows how a pair of anchor members 5 may secure containers A, B to the vehicle 6, similar members 5a being used on opposite corners of the containers. The adjacent corners of the containers are secured to members 61, which are similar to a pair of members 5, 5a joined together. In a second embodiment, two members 9, 62, Fig. 10, attached respectively to a container 10 and a vehicle 63 are locked together by means of a detachable member 68 and a key 86. A tongue 75 of the member 68 engages with the member 62 and is held in engagement therewith by a latch 78. The top part of the member 68 engages a recess within the member 9 and the key 86 passes through members 9 and 68 to lock them together. When the key 86 is inserted the latch 78 cannot be withdrawn. The key 86 is provided with an eccentric lug which must be rotated in moving the key from its locked to its unlocked position. In a third embodiment, Fig. 15, a member 9 attached to a container 10 is secured to a member 91 attached to a vehicle 90 by a key 95. An eccentric lug 95b is spring-urged into engagement with a recess in the interior of the member 9 when the key is in its locking position. The key 95 must be pushed inwardly and turned before it can be moved to its unlocked position. The same member 9 is used in all the embodiments described.
