A machine for supplying pressure-sensitive adhesive tape in U-form to packages has a tapeapplying member 3 or 33, displaceable by the leading face of a package 21, 22 and a follower member 19 or 38, for applying the tape to the retreating face of the package, said members being carried on supports on spaced apart pivots 5-15 or 35-36, yoked by links 20 or 41-42 in the plane of the pivot axes and urged apart by springs 17 or 40; tape-reversing means 7 or 43 being situated between the said members. Tape from a reel 6 or 32 goes over guide rollers 13 or 51 and lies on the applying member with its adhesive face exposed towards the package. The package or packages 21-22, moved by hand along a guide rail 1 or advanced along a conveyer 31 receive a length of tape on their forward face. The applying member is then deflected by the packets leading edge trails along its side face applying tape and continues still deflected beyond. The backing member is linked to the applying member and moves back similarly. The arms carrying the severing means 7 or 43 also trail along the side face, but when they reach the rear edge of the package they are swung forward about their pivots by a spring 8 or by a counterweight 44 to cut the tape. This frees the applying and backing members which are then urged out by their springs, the motion of the backing member serving to apply the severed end of the tape to the retreating rear face of the package. The tape may be severed by a knife 10 or an electrically-heated wire (Fig. 7, not shown). A spring-operated cutter, latched by a roller on a moving conveyer and triggered by the package is also described. The heated wire cutter is similar to that described in Specification 914,225, from which this Specification is divided.
