Apparatus for applying fusible pressure - sensitive adhesive tape having a base of unplasticized polyvinylchloride or like charge-generating film to an article has a heated element 26-27 for severing the tape, tape applying means including a backing member and a support for the free end portion of the tape below the backing member so that the tape lies against the latter whilst being cut. The packages 2 advance along a conveyer 1 to contact a backing strip 13 pivoted at 12 on which tape from the reel 30 clings adhesive-side-out by virtue of the electrical charge it gains when it unwinds. The strip 13 is connected to a presser-roller 18 on arm 16 through axis 14, and link 15 so that when the leading face of the package 2 pushes the strip 13 downwards out of its way, the roller 18 is similarly lowered. A short length of the tape thus adheres to the leading face and the tape continues along the undersurfaoe of the package until the strip 13 trails it clear of the rear edge. The heated wire is carried on an insulated arm 21 freely pivoted at 12. Like the strip 13 it is depressed by the leading edge of the package to trail along the undersurface of the latter, until, passing beyond the rear edge, it rises due to the counterweight 20 so that the hot wire severs the tape. This frees the strip 13 which rises due to a counterweight 19 and causes the roller 18 to pivot up and press the free end of the cut tape on to the receding face of the package. Similar mechanism (not shown here) is provided above the conveyer path 1 to apply tape along the ends and upper surface of the package. Specification 914,226 is referred to.
