Automatic control of a reactor 1 by control elements moved by servo drive 8 is effected in the phase of starting the sub-critical reactor by movement of a neutron-sensitive element 4 driven by servomotor 3 until the signal from 4 as compared in a reference circuit 6 with a signal from a source 5 ceases to apply a signal to 7 for the control of the servomotor 8. On achieving criticality the switch A is opened and the reactor is automatically controlled by movement to and fro of the sensitive element 4.
