A burner in which hydrocarbon gases are burnt in admixture with air, or with air and oxygen, comprises alternate slot-shaped auxiliary nozzles 5 and round auxiliary nozzles 6 surrounding the main burner nozzles 3. The gas/air mixture supplied through an inlet 1 passes via a distributing chamber 2 to the main burner nozzles 3 and via branch channels 4 to the auxiliary nozzles 5, 6. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the auxiliary nozzles are arranged in a rectangle surrounding a row of main burner nozzles.
