A moving picture projector comprises electrical control means for operating the electric motor and the projector lamp, and a cam and cam follower mechanism arranged for controlling the coupling of both of the reel spindles one at a time to a driving means, the electrical control means and the cam being operated by a common control shaft. The projector shown comprises a feed reel (not shown), a take-up spool (not shown) and two advancing sprockets 6, 9. A knob 17 on the outside of the projector moves over a dial having five setting positions, one each for forward and reverse running with and without the projector lamp on, and one for fast reverse running for rewinding the film with the lamp off. The knob 17 is mounted on a shaft 18 at the other end of which there are two cams 21 and 20. The cam 21 has a cam follower 32 on a lever 27 pivoted at 26, the other end 33 of which engages a groove 34 on a sleeve 35, said sleeve also having a ratchet wheel 37 for engagement with driving wheel 38 and a belt 39 connected to take-up reel. The cam comprises two parts 20a, 20b spaced at different distances along the shaft 18 and these connect, through a follower 29 on the pivoted lever 24, the ratchet wheel 44 on the slidable sleeve 42 with the driving wheel 38 or ratchet wheel 45, also on sleeve 42, with the driving wheel 46 depending on which cam part the follower rests. Sleeve 42 drives feed reel through belt 48 at different speeds depending on which of ratchets 44, 45 is connected to a driving-wheel. The driving-wheels 38, 46 are mounted on the same shaft and are rotated through worm gearing 49 by an electric motor (belt 50). This motor also serves to drive advancing sprockets 6, 9.
