Abstract

1278627 Film winding mechanism GAF CORP 19 June 1969 [5 July 1968] 31164/69 Heading G2E A drive system for winding material from a first reel on to a second reel includes a drive motor; a spindle 10 to which the centre of the first reel can be attached; a roller 16 shiftably mounted adjacent the spindle and selectively engageable therewith; and control means for placing the roller 16 in winding contact with the spindle 10 for an instant on switching from a winding mode to an "off" or "stop" position so that the material is taut between the reels before winding ceases. The spindle 10 may be driven either directly by the "fast" roller 16 or through a crossed belt 20 by a "slow" roller 18 and a spindle 22 may be driven directly by a "fast" roller 26 or by a "slow" roller 27 through a bolt 30, the rollers being mounted on pivoting plates 14, 23 which are positioned by arms 36, 45 respectively. The arm 45 is movable by a lever 52 which acts as a cam follower as does the arm 36. The rollers 16, 26 are belt-driven from engaging gears 58, 64 which in turn are belt-driven from a drive wheel 62 which is driven in one direction through a belt 68 or by direct contact in the opposite direction by a shiftable roller 70. A series of cams mounted on a shaft (94) Figs. 7 to 13 (not shown) positions arms 36, 52 and the roller 70 according to the operating mode required, and further cams operate the projection gate, the motor switch and a heat shield to protect film in the "still" mode. As the cams are rotated anti-clockwise (as seen) through 360 degrees, the operating modes passed through are "off", "forward", "still", "reverse", "stop", "fast forward", "stop" and "rewind". The belt 68 is slackened on movement to the "off" or "stop" position by slight upward movement of the roller 70, thereby disconnecting the drive. However, engagement between rollers 16, 26 and respective spindles 10, 22 is established by means of the action of the cams on the shaft (94) upon the arms 36, 52 just prior to slackening the belt 68 thereby momentarily urging the spindles in film winding directions. The rollers 16, 26 remain in contact with the spindles after the belt 68 has slackened to restrain the spindles from further movement.
