Abstract

A method of applying a coating to a limited portion of the surface of an article comprises the steps of engaging the said article with a holding device which covers and encloses all sections of the article on which a coating is not desired, heating the article to a temperature above the melting temperature of a pulverulent coating material the temperature of the holding device being below the sintering temperature of the coating material and immersing the article in the pulverulent coating material so that the coating material in proximity to the article surface sinters and fuses into a complete coating said holder being comprised of a non-metallic material which is resistent to coating and which is more resistent to heating than the masked are of the article. The pulverulent coating material may be in the form of a fluidized bed. The article to be coated may be heated by electromagnetic induction or by infra red radiation and the holding device may be made from polytetrafluoroethylene, silicone rubber or a chlorinated polyether. Polyformaldehyde or a high temperature resistant nylon may also be employed. Suitable inorganic non-metallic materials include vitreous materials, e.g. ceramics and porcelains. Examples are given of coating the outsides of vessels while masking the insides and of coating the outsides and part of the insides of vessels while masking the remainder of the inside and also of holders suitable for coating a large number of small objects such as hooks.
