Abstract

A method of applying a coating of thermoplastic material to elongated articles wherein the plastic in powder form is fluidized within a chamber by passage through the powder mass of a current of gas is characterized in that the article in a heated condition is continuously drawn into the chamber, and through the mass of fluidized powder therein. The term "elongated articles" includes articles having their longitudinal dimension greatly in excess of their cross-sectional dimensions such as wire, metal strip or wire mesh sheet. The thermoplastic powder may be polythene. Heating may be by means of a gas flame, a wire heating oven, constant electrodes, induction or infra-red means. An example describes the coating of wire-mesh-netting with fluidized polythene powder. At the point of entry into the coating chamber the path of the article may be in a horizontal direction and it may be passed out in a vertical direction through the top of the chamber. The porous base supporting the fluidized powder mass or the chamber containing the game may be subjected to agitation. The gas stream by which the powder mass is fluidized may be caused to pulsate. Means may be provided for removing any excess of powder adhering to the coating layer on leaving the chamber. The coated article may be subjected to heat treatment to sinter the coating as leaving the chamber. Specifications 759,214, 834,284 and 852,638 are referred to.
