Abstract

913,336. Separating isotopes, rare earth and like metals, electrolytically. OBINATA, I. Jan. 30, 1961 [Feb. 6, 1960], No. 3405/61. Class 41. Rare earth metals, isotopes and similar mixtures of elements are separated in a two-chamber electrolytic cell separated by a partition of ionexchange material R, a solution of the mixed elements being admitted to one chamber I and the other I<SP>1</SP> containing an acid electrolyte, e.g. HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , applying a D.C. voltage and a super-imposed A.C. voltage, or ultra-sonic energy. The lighter element is retained in the ion-exchange material, the reversal of the electric field causes the heavier element to move in a to-and-fro movement while moving near to and finally being deposited on the cathode E<SP>1</SP>. The D.C. is applied to the anode T by a battery connected through a choke and condenser to the anode of a valve circuit which supplies the A.C. In examples, ammonia solution is treated with 4 volts A.C. and 2 volts D.C. at 10 m.a. to separate the heavier N<SP>15</SP> isotope, and a solution containing U 235 and U 238 is similarly treated to separate these isotopes, the catholyte consisting of dilute HNO 3 . Reference is also made to separating isotopes of H, Li and B.
