[Also in Group XII] In a rotary-hearth furnace for heat-treating workpieces before forging (see Group XII), an annular horizontal hearth is rotated step-bystep by the intermittent operation of a rotary scroll cam 37 which engages rollers 36 attached to the lower periphery of the hearth. The rotary scroll cam 37, a feeder 52, an ejector 51 and a feed conveyer 45 are all intermittently actuated by an electric indexing motor 44 which stops after each indexing motion, and is restarted by the return of the ejector 51, whose forward speed is adjustable to vary the period of dwell between indexing motions.
