Abstract

912,710. Heating steam boilers by hot gases. SUPERHEATER CO. Ltd. March 11, 1960 [Feb. 4, 1959], No. 4005/59. Class 123 (2). A once-through steam boiler heated for example by the coolant gas of a nuclear reactor, comprises a cylindrical casing 5 in which is coaxially-disposed a tubular baffle 4, the tubular heating surfaces of the boiler being located in the annular space around the baffle 4. The heating surfaces consist of parallel-connected, concentric helical coils of tubing 10 ... 12. To compensate for the increasing length of the outer coils 11, 12 which would otherwise reduce the water-steam flow therethrough, the bore of the tubing of these coils is successively increased so that the temperature of the working fluid discharging from all the coils is the same. In a modification, Fig. 1, not shown, uniform heat input rates are obtained by varying the radial pitches of coils which are formed of tubing of the same bore so that they decrease progressively from the inner tube to the outer tube, increased heat transfer rates occurring at the inner coils which are of shorter length due to increased gas velocity thereover.
