Abstract
In a process producing dense soda ash, where trona is dissolved in a circulating aqueous solution of Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 containing a greater concentration of carbonate than bicarbonate insoluble and organic substances are removed from the loaded solution, sodium sesquicarbonate is crystallized by cooling and filtering, and the sesquicarbonate is heated to form light ash, a portion of the filtered circulating solution is withdrawn at any point in the cycle, and reacted with the light ash to form Na2CO3.H2O, which is heated to form dense ash. The withdrawn solution, containing 17,5-38 parts Na2CO3 and 1-16 parts NaHCO3/100 parts water (temperature 15 DEG -105 DEG C.) is contacted with light ash (temperature 140 DEG -265 DEG C.) to form a 1:1 molar mixture. Heating the Na2CO3.H2O to 140 DEG -210 DEG C. gives dense ash. The withdrawn liquor may be diluted with water before contacting with light ash.
