Abstract

912,440. Piston-rings; stuffing-box substitutes. WILLIAMS, H. R. Sept. 25, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960], No. 42059/60. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A radially slotted oil scraper ring 1 is provided with holes 9 extending from its upper face 7 to the slots 4. The ring has a peripheral groove 2 defining lower and upper lands 3A and 3B, respectively, and is housed in a groove 10 in the piston 11 having oil drainage holes 19 extending from the bottom of the groove. The holes 9 are interconnected by a circumferential groove 8 in the face 7. In operation, oil passing the land 3B and trapped in the clearance 12 above the ring during an upward stroke is forced through the holes 9 during the following downward stroke when the face 7 contacts the side 16 of the groove. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the ring has a single land 22 and holes 30 connect its upper face 28 with radial slots 26 extending from a continuous undercut groove 24. The invention is stated to be applicable to piston-rod packing.
