Abstract

912,297. Trueing grinding-wheels. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Sept. 15, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960], No. 33146/61. Class 60. A trueing mechanism for a grinding-wheel having a contoured profile comprises a tool-holder 44, Figs. 1 and 2, which is transversely slidable in a pivotally-mounted yoke 20 and more freely movable than the yoke, and a rotatable drive-shaft 86 which is journalled in the yoke and arranged to provide for slidable movement of the tool-holder in the yoke until the tool-holder is stopped by a stop and then for pivotal movement of the yoke. The diamond-tipped tool 42 is axially-adjustable in its holder by a micrometric adjusting screw and the tool-holder is laterally adjustable in the yoke between ball tracks 46, Fig. 2, within limits set by stops 96, 100 and a further adjustable stop 102, Fig. 8. The drive is effected by a chain 68 having its ends attached to hydraulically-operated pistons which are controlled by an electricallyoperated valve. A sleeve 72, Fig. 4, around the upper pivot bearing 22 of the yoke carries a sprocket 70 which is rotatable by the chain 68 to drive the shaft 86 through a pinion 78 and sector 84, the lower end of the shaft carrying a pinion 88 engaging a rack on the tool-holder. Initial rotation of the shaft 86 causes the tool-holder to be traversed in the yoke so that the tool trues along a straight path; an annular seal 92, Fig. 4, between the yoke and its support bracket 18 resists movement of the yoke during the action. The adjustable stop 102 stops the movement of the holder when the shaft 86 has rotated through 90 degrees so that, as the shaft rotates through another 90 degrees, the yoke is itself pivoted to swing the tool through an arcuate trueing path. Reverse action of the shaft results first in the tool-holder moving in the yoke away from the grinding- wheel, the seal 92 resisting movement of the yoke, and then, with the tool-holder engaging the stop 96, pivotal movement of the yoke to its starting position. By suitable positioning of the stops, the tool-holder may be held in a fixed position in the yoke so that the entire rotary movement of the shaft 86 is communicated to the yoke and an arcuate profile is trued across the full width of the grinding-wheel.
